In response to the current COVID lockout and lockdown, many fishers are wondering if they can go fishing this weekend. AFANT have reviewed the official NTG COVID Advice and have clarified with the office of the Minister for Recreational Fishing. We can advise the following:

Effective from 12.01am, 5 November 2021, the Municipality of Katherine including Tindal entered into a full lockdown for 72 hours.

As a result of high vaccination rates in the Greater Darwin Region, the below areas entered into a lockout for 72 hours. This means fully-vaccinated people are able to continue to live as normal (with the addition of masks and proof of vaccination) within the following Local Government Areas:

City of Darwin
City of Palmerston
Litchfield Council
Wagait Shire
Belyuen Shire
Dundee
Bynoe
Charlotte
Cox Peninsula

This means for people in Katherine there are only 5 reasons to leave home and fishing is not considered one of those essential activities.

For fully vaccinated people in Darwin, fishing is permitted within the Lockout area, however travel outside of this area is not permitted for the purpose of fishing. Check the lockout / lockdown map: NT Covid Map

People in greater Darwin who are unvaccinated or have only received one dose, are under “lockdown” conditions and can only leave the house for 5 reasons, and fishing is not considered one of those essential activities.

The good news is that Darwin Harbour, Bynoe Harbour and Shoal Bay are fishing well. And this weekend we have BIG tides with the high tides around dawn/dusk and the super low lows around midday. These tides should be great for Barramundi fishing around the lows and land-based fishers should encounter trevally and queenfish around the highs (try around Deckchair Cinema or Lameroo Beach).

Stay safe, and remember to check in, wear a mask and have your vaccination certificate ready if your our supporting local retail businesses.
