Golden Snapper 2026: Territory Needs a Better Recovery Plan, Not Business as Usual
AFANT has lodged its submission to the Northern Territory Government’s Golden Snapper Have Your Say consultation.
The next step is drafting a recovery plan and it’s a pivotal opportunity to break with the past and implement a better way forward for Golden Snapper recovery.
Golden Snapper management has been a long-term issue. Multiple interventions have been applied over recent decades, yet important constraints remain. These include uncertainty around stock structure and connectivity, limited monitoring, poor catch data quality, unresolved research priorities and weakened stakeholder confidence.
AFANT’s submission argues the next phase should move beyond business as usual and focus on a strategic recovery plan built around staged interventions, stronger science, genuine partnerships and practical reform.
A successful recovery pathway must improve fish stocks while also restoring trust, protecting Territory lifestyle and safeguarding businesses and jobs supported by recreational fishing.
AFANT’s Four Pillars for Recovery
- Secure funding for essential research to address significant knowledge gaps
- Priority investment in data and monitoring to reduce reliance on assumptions and to properly measure recovery progress
- Restore trust through genuine partnerships and co-management, stronger stewardship, and support industry preparedness for change
- Strategically sequence any additional restrictions to better target impacts while avoiding unnecessary economic and social harm
AFANT has also identified practical precautionary measures that could be considered immediately if required, including:
- Targeted spawning protections
- Vessel limit changes
- Stronger compliance
- Habitat enhancement
AFANT will continue engaging constructively with Government and other stakeholders to secure the best outcome for fish stocks, fishers and the Territory.
We have received assurances from Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries that the draft plan will also be released for public consultation prior to adoption.
