The Aboriginal Land Commissioner has commenced inquiry into the Woolner / Mary River Region Land Claim (No 192) and the Peron Islands Area Land Claim (No 190) – Would you suffer if you lost access or if access became costly / exclusive?

The claims relate to the bed and banks of parts of the Mary River (including Shady Camp, Shady Fresh, the Rockhole, Mary River Bridge Lagoon), parts of the bed and banks of the Wildman River (near the mouth), as well as the inter-tidal zone (coast line) at Channel Point / Northern Anson Bay and the Woolner / Mary Region (From the Mouth of the Adelaide River to near Tommycut Creek).

In his report, the Aboriginal Land Commissioner is required to inform the Minister (the decision-maker) about the impacts/ detriment that other people (like recreational fishers) may suffer if the claims are granted and future access becomes prohibited or costly.

So, if you fish in any of these areas, then we need to hear from you! Now! First-hand information from recreational fishers will be essential to AFANT being able to substantiate detriment issues for the statement we are preparing to lodge with the Commissioner.

If you care about fishing at Shady Camp, Channel Point, Mary River or Wildman River; you should take a few minutes to complete the survey.

The 2017 AFANT Annual General Meeting was held on Sunday April 2, at Tracy Village.

It was great to see AFANT Members and supporters turn out to catch up on the year that was, and to take a look at the opportunities and challenges that lay ahead. Elections saw Warren de With returned as President, Scotty Mitchell returned as Secretary, and Megan Brown re-elected to the Committee.

Following the formalities, special guest NT Fisheries Minister Hon. Ken Vowles gave an update on the Territory Government’s commitment to invest $50M into recreational fishing infrastructure and other projects. The Minister announced the roll out of fast-tracks for projects including upgrading the Shady Camp ramp, sealing the carpark at Dundee boat ramp, upgrades to facilities and security at Dinah Beach ramp, repairs to the Corroboree Billabong road, as well as consultancies tasked with investigating Artificial Reef building, FAD deployment and new land-based fishing infrastructure.

The meeting also featured a presentation from Inquiry Chair Justice Rachel Pepper, outlining the process of the Independent Inquiry into Fracking, and CDU Associate Professor David Crook, who delivered an update on his exciting project, which uses sonic tags to track barramundi movements in the Roper River. These presentations were highly informative and engaging, with many questions coming from the floor.

Members and guests enjoyed a free BBQ lunch and took the chance to catch up, while AFANT spoke with the waiting TV media. Thanks again to all who attended and be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the next AGM in about 12 months time!
