AFANT ASKS NT POLITICAL PARTIES TO SUPPORT A BRIGHT FISHING FUTURE

i Jul 20th No Comments by

The Amateur Fishermen’s Association of the NT (AFANT), the peak body representing recreational fishers across the Territory, has asked the NT’s major political parties how they will each commit to ensuring a bright future for the Top End’s 30,000 recreational fishers.

The NT has the enviable position as Australia’s top fishing location. Yet great fishing is not guaranteed, it is dependent on a range of government policy settings and investment decisions. The AFANT 2020 Policy Questionnaire asks political parties about where they stand on the key areas that impact upon recreational fishing, and what their plans are to address priority needs and to support our vibrant and diverse sector.

AFANT’s comprehensive document puts forward policy questions in a range of areas including fisheries management, access to fishing grounds, infrastructure development and maintenance, environmental protection, water resource governance, and funding for community groups, projects and inclusive activities. All major parties have now received the questionnaire, with responses required by Monday August 3. AFANT will publish a breakdown of the responses received, as well as the full replies, later that same week.

“Fishers come from all walks of life and there is no “typical” recreational fisher. There are, however, a range of values and policy matters that are essential to supporting our fisheries and to ensure the NT’s high quality fishing experiences are maintained beyond 2020.

“In the lead up to the 2020 NT Election AFANT is working to ensure that our community has the most accurate information about the policies of each party, so that fishers can understand how they each plan to address the key issues, and ensure a bright recreational fishing future for everyone.

Quotes attributable to Warren de With, AFANT President

“The Territory a has the best fishing in Australia and to keep it that way, it is essential that policymakers, especially those contending to lead the Territory, fully understand that a bright fishing future depends on a range of key policy settings.

“Through our questionnaire and engagement with the parties, AFANT is seeking to ensure that all of the important issues are properly addressed and that clear information is available to the community.
